Lawmaker Asks Washington Governor to Okay Plant

LCG, Feb. 22, 2001A Washington state legislator has asked Gov. Gary Locke to reject the recommendation of the state's Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council and approve a proposed 660 megawatt power plant that would be built in the town of Sumas, near the Canadian border.

Earlier this week, the Council voted against the plant, citing "environmental concerns." The Council also said it was afraid the plant's operators would sell the plant's output to the highest bidder and not reserve it for Washington state use.

Rep. Clyde Ballard, co-speaker of the Washington state House of Representatives, in a letter to the governor, called the recommendation a "bureaucratic bungle" and said the Council exaggerated possible environmental effects.

Ballard also said that where the power from the plant is sold is irrelevant. He pointed out that the big regional federal power producer, the Bonneville power Administration, is short 3,000 megawatts and the Sumas plant would make up more than a fifth of that insufficiency.

In his letter, Ballard also asked Locke to replace the members of the Council.
