Duke Begins Building 570 Megawatts Near Phoenix

LCG, Feb. 22, 2001Duke Energy North America yesterday began construction on a 570 megawatt merchant power plant in Arlington Valley, Ariz., west of Phoenix. Duke said the $250 million facility would begin commercial operation by the summer of next year.

Arizona governor Jane Hull said at a ground-breaking ceremony it was critically important to her "that Arizona's electricity consumers have confidence in our electric generation system, and knowledge that the energy they desire will be available as needed. That is why I am grateful for the investment Duke Energy is making here in western Maricopa County."

The new plant will be a natural gas-fired, combined cycle plant equipped with advance pollution control equipment. According to Duke, the project has met and exceeded environmental and community requirements and gained support of Maricopa's county supervisors.

Duke said that during the 18-month construction period, the project will generate some 500construction-related jobs. When it's finished, a permanent staff of about 25 employees will operate and maintain the plant.

Gov. Hull enthused, "The Arlington Valley Energy Facility will provide critically needed electrical generation capacity, add to our local economy by employing hundreds of skilled workers during construction and pay millions of dollars in taxes that will go to support local schools."
