AES to Buy Control of Ukraine Electricity Distributor

LCG, April 18, 2001AES Corp. said yesterday it had won a bid to purchase a 75 percent interest in Kievoblenergo, the electric distribution business serving the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, for about $45.9 million.

AES said completion of the deal is subject to an official review of the bid by the Ukraine State Property Fund and the execution of a sale and purchase agreement.

Last year, Kievoblenergo distributed 3.84 million megawatt-hours of electricity to around 763,000 customers. The remaining 25 percent ownership of the business is either publicly traded or owned by employees of the company.

Garry Levesley, an AES vice president, said "The acquisition of Kievoblenergo represents ourfirst successful step into the Ukraine energy market. Our experience in operating 13 generating anddistribution businesses in Kazakhstan and The Republic of Georgia has prepared us well for entry intothis promising market."

Kievoblenergo is one of six distribution companies that are being privatized this month by thegovernment of Ukraine and is the largest of the 20 distribution companies slated to be sold under its privatization program.
