J. Clifford Baxter will resign as vice chairman of Enron Corp. after 10 years with the company, in order to spend additional time with his family. Baxter will continue to work as a consultant with the firm. He was chairman and chief executive of Enron North America before becoming vice chairman in October last year.

Bernard J. Beaudoin, president and chief executive of Kansas City Power & Light Co., has been elected chairman of the company's board of directors, succeeding Drue Jennings, who retired effective May 1 following the company's annual meeting.

Chris Bell has been named vice president for economic development by Alabama Power Co. He most recently was business development manager for energy marketing.

Stephen T. Easley has been named president and chief executive of Great Plains Power, the newly formed unregulated wholesale electric generation subsidiary of Kansas City Power & Light Co. He most recently has been KCP&L's vice president for business development.

F. Peter Ford has been named to independent Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Dr. Ford, recently retired from General Electric Co., is a consultant with 40 years experience in conducting and managing materials research anddevelopment programs in the power generation and materials processing industries.

John Forsgren, chief financial officer of Northeast Utilities, has been given the additional title of vice chairman. In that role, he will be responsible for developing NU's competitive business strategy, including Select Energy, the company's unregulated energy marketer.

Cheryl Grise, formerly general counsel of Northeast Utilities, has been namedpresident of the company's utility group. In her new position, she will have all of NU's regulated electric and gas operating companies reporting directly to her, which includes Connecticut Light & Power Co., Western Massachusetts Electric Co., Public Service Co. of New Hampshire and Yankee Energy Co.

Luis A. Jimenez, vice president and chief strategy officer of Pitney Bowes Inc., has been elected a director of Kansas City Power & Light Co.

Gordon Martin has been named a vice president of Alabama Power Co. and placed in charge of the company's southern division. He most recently served as manager of external affairs for Southern Co. Generation and Energy Marketing.

David Meador has been named senior vice president and chief financial officer of DTE Energy Co., effective with the close of the company's merger with the MCN Energy Group. He will succeed Larry Garberding, who will continue as executive vice president and a member of the DTE Energy board until his retirement at year-end.

Thomas O'Flynn, a managing director at Morgan Stanley, has been named chief financial officer of Public Service Enterprise Group Inc., effective July 1. He replaces Robert Murray, who will retire as vice president and CFO, after holding the position since 1992.

William J. Smethurst Jr., treasurer of South Jersey Industries Inc. and a 28-year veteran of the company, has said he will take early retirement. David Kindlick, vice president for finance and rates, has been appointed to fill the vacancy.

Southern Co. Goes to its Bench for Top Talent

The Southern Co. has announced several management changes "to expedite implementation of the company's new business strategy."

  • Dwight Evans, president and chief executive of Mississippi Power Co., has been named executive vice president of Southern Co. and president, Southern Co. External Affairs Group.

  • Leonard Haynes, senior vice president of marketing at Georgia Power Co., has been named executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Southern Co.

  • Ed Holland, president and chief executive of Savannah Electric Co., has been named executive vice president and general counsel of Southern Co.

  • Gale Klappa has been named executive vice president of Southern Co. and will also retain his position as chief financial officer and treasurer. He will continue to be responsible for corporate strategy.

  • Paul Bowers, Southern Co.'s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, has been named president of Southern Co. Generation and Energy Marketing, which manages and generates electricity for Southern Company's operating companies and markets electricity in the competitive wholesale supply business across the Southeast. He is also president and chief executive of Southern Power, which owns, builds and operates new power generating stations in the Southeast.

  • Mike Garrett, executive vice president of Alabama Power Co., has been named president and chief executive of Mississippi Power Co.

  • Anthony James, senior production officer for Savannah Electric Co., has been named president and chief executive of Savannah Electric.

  • Charles McCrary, president of Southern Co. Generation and Southern Power, has been named president and chief operating officer of Alabama Power Co.

Niagara Mohawk-National Grid Post-merger Executives Announced

National Grid and Niagara Mohawk Holdings Inc. have announced that ten executives from the two organizations have been appointed to senior management positions in the post-merger organization. The appointments will take effect upon completion of the transaction later this year.

  • Richard P. Sergel continues in his roles as president and chief executive of National Grid USA and as executive director of National Grid Group. He will be based in Westborough, Mass.

  • William E. Davis, chairman of Niagara Mohawk Holdings Inc., will serve as chairman of National Grid USA and executive director of National Grid Group. He will be based in Syracuse, N.Y.

  • Michael E. Jesanis continues as executive vice president of National Grid USA and chief operating officer, responsible for the electric and gas distribution groups in New York and New England, transmission, and operations shared services. He will be based in Westborough.

  • William F. Edwards, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Niagara Mohawk Holdings Inc, will become senior vice president of National Grid USA and president of Niagara Mohawk. He will be responsible for the New York electric and gas distribution businesses, and will be based in Syracuse.

  • Cheryl A. LaFleur continues as senior vice president of National Grid USA and president of the New England distribution companies, responsible for the electric distribution business in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. She will be based in Northborough, Mass.

  • Ian C. Davis continues as vice president of National Grid USA, responsible for the combined New York and New England transmission business. He will be based in Westborough.

  • Darlene D. Kerr, president of Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., will become senior vice president of National Grid USA and president of National Grid USA Service Company. Her responsibilities will include human resources, information systems, property management as well as web and e-business. She will have offices in both Syracuse and Westborough.

  • Lawrence J. Reilly continues as senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary for National Grid USA. He will head the legal and external affairs group and will be based in Westborough.

  • John G. Cochrane will continue as vice president of National Grid USA and chief financial officer, and will head the financial services group. He will be based in Westborough.

  • Michael J. Kelleher, vice president of financial planning of Niagara Mohawk Holdings Inc., will become vice president of National Grid USA. His responsibilities will include new business ventures, and mergers and acquisitions. He will be based in Westborough.
