Defunct Utility.com Makes Refunds in Pennsylvania

LCG, May 15, 2001Pennsylvania Consumer Advocate Sonny Popowsky said yesterday that a defunct Internet-based electricity supplier will make refunds averaging about $70 each to more than 1,000 Pennsylvania customers who had switched to the failed dot-com.

Utility.com was licensed to provide electric generation service in Pennsylvania, but went out ofbusiness in early March of this year. The Office of Consumer Advocate filed a complaint for refunds against the dot-com with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission on behalf of state customers who were entitled to refunds when their service was terminated.

Refund checks are being sent in intervals, depending upon when Utility.com received final usageinformation from Pennsylvania electric utility companies, Popowsky's office said.

Most of the first group to get refunds live in Duquesne Light Co. and Allegheny Energy service territories. Refund checks to customers residing in other utility service areas are expected to be issued within the next several weeks, as final bills are calculated, the advocacy office said.
