Florida Approves Calpine 529 Megawatter

LCG, June 28, 2001Calpine Corp. said this morning that the Florida Power Plant Siting Board had granted final state regulatory approval for its proposed 529 megawatt Osprey Energy Center, to be located in Auburndale, east of Tampa in central Florida.

The Siting Board, comprised of Gov. Jeb Bush and the state's independently elected cabinet, voted unanimously for approval.

Calpine said it is the first independent power producer to receive approval of a Site Certification Application for a large-scale combined-cycle generating facility under Florida's complex Power Plant Siting Act.

The company said it would begin construction later this year but did not say when commercial operation could be expected. Fuel for the plant will be supplied by the new Gulfstream Pipeline, which is currently under construction.

The Osprey Energy Center will provide output under long-term contract to Seminole Electric Cooperative Inc.

Bob Alff, Calpine senior vice president and head of its east region portfolio said "We are greatly pleased to be the first independent power producer to successfully navigate Florida's difficult power plant approval process."
