Dynegy May Buy Two Big UK Power Plants

LCG, Sept. 10, 2001--Dynegy Inc. of the U.S. is close to acquiring two of Britain's biggest power stations for up to 600 million ($892 million U.S.), the Sunday Times of London said yesterday.

Dynegy is believed to have outbid rivals such as Scottish Power and Scottish & Southern in the auction for Fiddlers Ferry in Cheshire and Ferrybridge in Yorkshire which began this year. The seller is Edison Mission Energy, a unit of California's beleaguered Edison International Inc., which purchased the plants in 1999 from PowerGen Plc for 1.3 billion ($2 billion).

Despite the 50 percent discount off Edison's purchase price, Dynegy's offer is considered generous in the face of declining power prices in the UK, the paper said.

Dynegy would not comment on the deal for the British power stations, but it did say that the company planned to continue its expansion in Europe and was always looking for acquisition targets.
