Heat Sends East Coast Power Use Soaring

LCG, July 26, 2001-- Hot, sticky weather along the U.S. eastern seaboard sent electric power use soaring yesterday, prompting utilities and the nation's largest independent system operator to call on customers to conserve energy.

The heat wave pushed electricity demand to a new summer record level for PPL Electric Utilities on Wednesday afternoon, PPL Corp. said. Between 1 and 2 p.m., PPL Electric Utilities delivered 6,394 megawatt- hours of electricity to its 1.3 million customers. That surpassed the existing summer record of 6,387 megawatt-hours set on July 19, 1999.

Consolidated Edison Inc. said in a statement that it hit a new peak in energy demand at 2 p.m. EDT by providing 11,858 megawatts in electrical power to its 3.1 million customers. The new benchmark eclipsed the previous record of 11,850 megawatts set on July 6, 1999.

Baltimore Gas & Electric Co., Potomac Electric Power Co. and Public Service Electric & Gas Co. said they and other PJM Power Pool companies asked that customers cut back their non-essential electricity use until early evening unless it is equipment required for health or safety purposes.

All PJM Power Pool companies serving 22 million people in the mid- Atlantic area activated similar reduction programs because of high energy demand due to the hot, humid weather.
