China: Death Penalty for Stealing Transmission Wires

LCG, Aug. 6, 2001--A Chinese man who stole a 500 kilovolt transmission line has been sentenced to death for the crime by the Supreme People's Court of Fukien Province, a coastal state fronting on the Taiwan Strait.

The Xinhua news agency reported Saturday that Sun Huaijun had been found guilty of cutting out the line which connects power plant in the town of Changchow with the city of Amoy, on the coast.

It was the second offense for Sun, who had stolen the line earlier in December, 1999. In both thefts, he hauled off 2.4 miles of wire, causing a loss of 2.62 million yuan ($316,000 U.S.) the news agency said.

After the second offense, which Sun committed in January, 2000, police tracked him down in the city of Canton, in Kwangtung Province to the south, where he was arrested in March last year.

According the Xinhua, sabotage of electricity facilities has become common and is considered a serious crime in China. In Fukien Province alone, 364 cases of theft and sabotage of power facilities were reported over the past four years, representing a total loss of 8 million yuan ($964 million).

For those who order Beijing duck instead of Peking duck, Fukien Province is Fujian Province, Changchow is Zhangzhou, Amoy is Xiamen, Canton is Guangzhou and Kwangtung is Guangdong.
