Alliant, Panda Plan 1,100 Michigan Megawatts

LCG, Oct. 4, 2001--Alliant Energy Corp. today announced an agreement with Panda Energy International to develop and operate a 1,100-megawatt natural gas combined-cycle power plant in western Michigan. The facility is expected to become operational in 2004, the announcement said.

Alliant and Panda said a "significant portion" of the output from the $600 million, natural gas fueled, combined-cycle plant would be sold under long-term contracts, while Alliant will manage sale of the power not contracted for.

Construction of the facility could begin in the first quarter of next year, if the customary permits and approvals are forthcoming, the companies said.

William D. Harvey, Alliant's executive vice president in charge of generation, said "Through the construction of this project, Alliant Energy affirms its core commitment to reliability and the environment. This plant will help provide additional fuel diversity and a cleaner environmental profile to the heavily coal dependent (East Central Area Reliability Council) region of the country."

Alliant said the project is a first for the company, representing its entry into domestic non-regulated generation. It is also Alliant's first venture in the state of Michigan.

Panda will provide development services for the new project, while an Alliant subsidiary will maintain and operate the plant.
