Palo Verde Unit 2 Down for Control Repairs
LCG, Oct. 11, 2001--Arizona Public Service Co. yesterday shut down its 1,270 megawatt Palo Verde Unit 2 nuclear power plant for repairs to its control system, characterizing the shutdown as "unscheduled maintenance."During a scheduled 35-day refueling shutdown of Unit 3 beginning September 29, operators identified degradation of the control systems. Because Unit 3 is an identical twin of Unit 2, the latter unit was shut down as a preventive measure yesterday.APS said the work could take up to a month to complete."Replacement activities in Units 2 and 3 will not impact the schedule for Unit 3's refueling, which is expected to be complete in early November," APS said. The control assemblies of 1,270 megawatt Unit 1 at Palo Verde were changed during a refueling outage earlier this year, the company said.
