Calpine Plans Power Plants in California, South Carolina

LCG, Nov. 2, 2001--Independent power producer Calpine Corp. said yesterday it plans to build more than 2,000 megawatts of new generating capacity, with two new plant, one in California and one in South Carolina.

The company said it has applied to the California Energy Commission for permission to build a 1,100 megawatt Central Valley Energy Center in San Joaquin, a town due west of Fresno.

Calpine said the combined-cycle, natural gas-fueled plant could be on-line by mid 2004, supplying much needed power to the San Joaquin Valley.

"After the greater San Francisco Bay Area, this is considered California's most electrically vulnerable region," said Curt Hildebrand, Calpine vice president for business development.

At the same time, the San Jose, Calif.-based power plant developer said it plans to build a new 905 megawatt power plant in South Carolina.

Also a combined-cycle, natural gas-fueled plant, the Palmetto Energy Center could begin commercial operations in early 2005, the company said.

Calpine said it is on track to expand its generating capacity to 70,000 megawatts by the end of 2005 from about 11,100 megawatts now.
