NRC Accepts the Construction Permit Application for TVA's Small Modular Reactor Project

LCG, July 10, 2025--The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) accepted a construction permit application for review from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to build one of the nation’s first small modular reactors (SMR). TVA submitted its application in late May to use GE Vernova Hitachi’s BWRX-300 design and to install the advanced nuclear plant at its Clinch River site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Wait 'Til Next Year for New EPA Power Plant Rules

LCG, Nov. 12, 2001--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Friday it will likely miss its self-imposed year-end deadline for issuing stricter power plant air pollution standards.

New proposals from the Bush administration are also being awaited by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee headed by Sen. James M. Jeffords, the Independent from Vermont. The committee has said it will move ahead with legislation calling for cuts of at least 75 percent in power plant emissions.

A recent EPA study supported claims by U.S. utilities that the proposed limits on carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury would increase the cost of power by more than a third and have a calamitous effect on the U.S. economy.

Last week, Bill Harnett, a division director of EPA's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards, told a meeting of the National Coal Council that the EPA would likely issue its new standards early next year.

Jeffords wants the 75 percent emissions cuts in place sometime in the coming year, but the Bush administration said last week it will oppose the legislation. The administration would regard carbon dioxide as a non-pollutant and provide trading mechanisms for the other three.
