UK's Centrica Buys Enron's European Energy Retailer

LCG, Dec. 5, 2001--Centrica Plc, Britain's largest natural gas supplier, said yesterday it had agreed to buy Enron Corp.'s European retail arm Enron Direct for 96.4 million ($137.1 million U.S.).

Enron Direct serves about 160,000 commercial customers with long-term contracts stretching out as much as five years.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the accounting firm appointed last week as administrator for Enron Europe, agreed to Centrica's offer, which exceeded rival bids by Electricit de France and British utility Innogy.

Mike Alexander, managing director of the British Gas Trading subsidiary, said "This provides an ideal platform for advancing our plans for the commercial market. These long term customers represent an attractive additional market segment for Centrica."

Earlier, EdF seemed to be counting its chickens before they were hatched. Gerard Wolf, director of the French utility's chairman's office, had said "Enron Direct would fit well with our London Electricity business."

There remains a possibility that EdF could bid for Enron's 1,875 megawatt natural gas-fueled Teesside power plant in England. "We need to be more balanced in the UK. We need more generation," Wolf said.

Most of Enron Direct's business is in the UK, but there are small Spanish and Dutch units, Enron Directo and Enron Direkt.
