Google Announces Gas-fired Broadwing Energy Project with CCS

Employees Sue SoCal Gas for Back Overtime

LCG, Dec. 17, 2001--A group of Southern California Gas Co. employees has filed suit claiming that the company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sempra Energy, has systematically required field crew workers to work six-day weeks, but has refused to pay overtime.

Lawyers for the workers hope to make a class action suit of it, and represent as many as 500 workers.

According to the suit, before 1996 many SoCal Gas employees who voluntarily agreed to work on Saturdays following a full, five-day week were allowed to take a day off in the following week. Beginning in 1996, the lawyers say, the company changed the policy, making Saturday a required workday, but refused to pay overtime compensation.

Kevin Roddy, an attorney for the workers, said the company refused to pay overtime when workers clocked more than 40 hours. "Our clients repeatedly asked the SoCal Gas to live up to their responsibilities and pay the required time-and-a-half, but were shut down at every turn," he said. "The company has tried to hide behind a series of transparent excuses, none of which stand up to the iron-clad standard that you pay time-and-a-half for work beyond 40 hours a week."

Roddy said employees have filed formal grievances with SoCal Gas, but have had their claims rejected. No mention was made whether the company still offers employees compensatory time off.

Southern California Gas Co. is the nation's largest natural gas distribution utility, serving 18 million consumers through 5 million meters. The company's service area encompasses 23,000 square miles throughout central and Southern California.
