TerraPower Announces Start of Construction on First Utility-Scale Advanced Nuclear Plant in Wyoming

LCG, April 23, 2026--TerraPower announced today the official start of construction on its Kemmerer Unit 1 nuclear power plant, which could be the first utility-scale advanced nuclear power plant in the United States. In early March, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced that it had authorized the staff to issue a construction permit for Unit 1 commercial nuclear power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming.

TVA Announces Two Energy Storage Agreements Totaling 425 MW/1,700 MWh

LCG, April 22, 2026--The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) yesterday announced two new, 20-year agreements for a 225 MW/900 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in East Tennessee and for a 200 MW/800 MWh BESS project in northern Alabama. Both projects are planned to commence commercial operations in 2029.

Ronald Bertasi, most recently with Enron Energy Services, has been named vice president for product management by The Southern Co. He will also be president and chief executive ofSouthern Company Energy Solutions.

Robert M. Flavin has joined CMS Marketing, Services and Trading, a subsidiary of CMS Energy Corp., in the new position of vice president for accounting and administration. He previously was senior vice president with Coast Energy Group, the energy marketing division of Cornerstone Propane Partners.

Lew Hay, president and chief executive of FPL Group Inc., will alsobecome the company's chairman at the end of the year when James Broadhead retires.

Kenneth Lay, chief executive of troubled energy trader Enron Corp., has voluntarily resigned from the board of directors of drugmaker Eli Lilly and Co.

Richard J. Mark has been named vice president for customer service by Ameren Corp., joining the company from Ancilla Systems Inc., where he was a senior vice president.

Don Shippar, currently executive vice president and chief operating officer of Minnesota Power Co., will become president and chief operating officer effective January 1.

Steve Smith, former director of trading arrangements with Britain's Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, will join AEP Energy Services Ltd., the London-based European wholesale marketing and trading subsidiary of American Electric Power Co. Inc., on February 1 as director of environmental and regulatory affairs for the UK and Europe.

Southern Co. Unit Makes Management Changes
Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing, a business unit of The Southern Co. that manages and generates electricity for the company's retail markets and markets energy in the competitive wholesale supply business, has announced several management changes.

  • Doug Jones was named senior vice president for energy marketing. He will continue to have manage the company's wholesale marketing and trading business and fleet dispatch.

  • Ed Day was named vice president for business development, responsible for directing the company's expanding wholesale marketing and business development activities in the Southeast.

  • Robert Moore was named senior vice president and senior production officer for Southern Power Co., a subsidiary that manages the company's unregulated generation fleet.

  • Chris Womack was named senior vice president and senior production officer of Southern Company Generation and Energy Marketing and will be responsible for Georgia Power fleet operations.
  • Ashley Baker was named vice president for fossil and hydro engineering, procurement and construction.
