Brazilians Deal With Effects of Large-scale Blackout

LCG, Jan. 22, 2002--A blackout attributed to transmission line failures was confirmed in five Brazilian states Monday, lasting over two hours.

According to a spokesman for the Itaipu hydroelectric dam, where 25 percent of Brazil's hydropower is generated, more than half of the dam's 18 turbines became inoperable due to a failure on a transmission line. The cities of Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Rio De Janeiro, Goiania, Vitoria and Brasilia, the capital, were affected starting at 1:30 p.m., until about 4 p.m.

The areas experiencing the blackout faced the stoppage of industrial activity and some commerce. Banks were generally closed, although backup generators helped foreign exchanges and stock exchanges to operate through the blackout. Major traffic congestion was caused at intersections with darkened traffic lights, and air travel was slowed by some flight cancellations.

90 percent of Brazil's electricity comes from hydropower.
