Cheney and Head of General Accounting Office Square Off

LCG, Jan. 28, 2002--David M. Walker said in an interview yesterday evening that he is "highly likely" to file a lawsuit against the White House by the end of the week if Vice-President Dick Cheney fails to respond to the General Accounting Office's demand for documents from energy policy meetings headed by Cheney.

Cheney told ABC's "This Week" and "Fox News Sunday" that private communications of the president and vice president would be harmed by a lawsuit by the Congressional watchdog agency. He further claimed that the GAO's initial request for the documents last summer was not followed up after being rebuffed, and that only the Congress' and media's focus on the collapse of Enron had been responsible for renewed requests for the documents.

Walker, appointed to a fifteen-year term as comptroller general by President Bill Clinton, and veteran of the Reagan and first Bush administration, said that Cheney's selection to be in charge of energy policy development was intended to head off scrutiny from outside the executive branch. He maintained that no constitutional basis existed for keeping communications at a series of meetings with industry representatives private. Walker said, "I know they want to present it that way because they think people will be more sympathetic, but that's not factually accurate."

Cheney, speaking on ABC in reference to the White House's dealings with Enron, "Enron didn't get any special deals. Enron's been treated appropriately by this administration."
