PG&E to Pay Franchise Fee to Local Governments on Time

LCG, April 3, 2002-PG&E said yesterday that it will pay $145 million in franchise fees to hundreds of counties and cities in its service area, as required by its contracts.

The 2001 franchise fee surcharge has increased by 44 percent over the 2000 charge.

While the utility is still working out its financial situation in bankruptcy court, PG&E chief executive Gordon Smith has proudly announced that the company will fulfill commitments in franchise fees which he says are necessary to support government programs and services.

Franchise fees, a percent of gross receipts, are charged by cities and counties for PG&E's use of public streets.

Cities and counties with March 31 deadlines have been paid, and those with April 15th deadlines will be paid on time, according to PG&E.

Creditors of PG&E will vote on plans regarding PG&E's $13.2 billion debt later this year.
