EU Energy Plan Opens Market
LCG, March 18, 2002-After France conceded, the European Union came to the decision to open energy markets.Over the past weeks France has been avoiding giving in to pressure from the rest of the EU regarding creating a free market to replace its state-run energy industry. However, France conceded this past Saturday at the EU summit, and European energy markets will be opened to competition.Officials from pre-election France were hesitant to take up free-market initiatives and were not convinced that competitive markets would improve service. The EU has planned to make decisions sometime this year regarding how governments will protect non-commercial energy supply to the public, an issue France has insisted be addressed. The EU will allow private gas and electricity companies to operate freely within the 15 participating nations beginning in 2004.
