Less than Twenty Generators Produce Half of All Emissions
LCG, March 25, 2002-A study conducted by two environmental policy organizations found that over fifty percent of all U.S. noxious air emissions came from less than twenty utilities.Using 2000 federal emissions data to rank companies relative to the quantity and type of generators they own, the report included one hundred of the largest companies in the U.S.Four pollutants were considered: mercury, sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide. These contaminants contribute both to health and environmental problems.Critics such as AEP, the country's largest generator, say that the study is out of date and ignores improvements made by polluters and changes in holdings. The Natural Resources Defense Council and the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies sponsored the study and hope that legislators will consider those with the least pollution relative to the extent of operations as a standard for the industry.
