Peruvians Strike Against Privatization

LCG, April 17, 2002--Civic groups in three southern areas of Peru began a two-day strike protesting the privatization of Peru's electricity industry.

Interest groups assert that nothing beneficial will come of privatizing the electricity sector, and too much control will be handed over to foreign investors. Worker fear layoffs, higher costs, and the creation of antagonistic monopolies.

Generacion Electrica de Arequipa (EGASA) and Generacion Electrica del Sur (EGESUR) are scheduled for privatization April 30.

Peruvian Financial Minister Pedro Pablo Kuczynski insists that the state-owned assets will be sold, and that Peru will be able to reap $700 million from the sales.

According to Peruvian polling, as many as seven tenths of people asked are against privatizing electricity.

Transmission companies Etecen and Etesur will be up for sale on April 23, and four regional electricity distribution will be auctioned on May 30: they are Electronorte SAC, Electro Norte Medio SA, Electrocentro SA, and Elerctronoroeste SA.
