California DWR and CalPeak Rewrite Long-term Contract
LCG, May 3, 2002--San Diego's CalPeak, part of United Technologies Corp., has rewritten its contract with the California Department of Water Resources. Last week California renegotiated 8 contracts, amounting to some thirty percent of long-term contracts written last year. In step with other energy companies, CalPeak agreed to reduce its 10-year contract with the DWR, slimming the price by $71 million to $332 million. The DWR will buy from one fewer 48 MW peaker plants, according to the rewritten contract, so that the DWR will have 288 instead of 336 MW peak capacity from CalPeak. Additionally, capacity payments, which guarantee supply, have been decreased by $750,000 annually for ten years.
