Calpine Plant Construction Delayed Because of Electricity Prices
LCG, May 6, 2002-A planned 1,060 MW California plant faces delays because of waning electricity prices. Calpine Corp. is reconsidering its plan to build a natural gas-fired plant west of Fresno. Project Manager Mike Argentine said Calpine will decide on the future of the proposed plant after the state has licensed it, but if a move had to be made right now, the plant would probably not be built. The company has postponed construction of 34 plants nationwide because of the downturn in energy industry stocks, according to a company spokeswoman. Calpine runs 25 California gas-fired or geothermal plants and is currently building three others. The company recently renegotiated electricity contracts with the state, which resulted in agreements to finish new generation projects.
