Jamaica Public Service Leaves Presidential Dinner Guests Powerless

LCG, August 7, 2002-Mirant Corp.-owned Jamaica Public Service, the only electricity company in the area, was unable to keep the lights on during a government party.

Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson, Guyana President Bharrat Jagdeo and Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, along with world heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis, were left in the dark during a power failure of over an hour.

An earlier party, in February, resulted in similar embarrassment when Britain's Queen Elizabeth and a hundred others joined Jamaica's Governor General at his home.

Jamaica Public Service owns generation, transmission, and distribution of all electricity in Jamaica and claims to provide electricity to 95 percent, or 2.5 million, of people in Jamaica.

The company, of which 80 percent is owned by U.S. Corporation Mirant, has 800 MW total generating capacity with an additional 120 MW plant in construction.
