ISO New England Allows NRG Plant Shutdown
LCG, August 12, 2002-On Friday, the New England Independent System Operator allowed NRG to take its Devon plant off line. The plant's shutdown had been discussed for several months. NRG wanted to shut it down because the operating costs were too high relative to electricity prices. ISO New England was cautious about allowing the shutdown since the plant supplies southwest Connecticut, which already has limited energy reserves.NRG will be allowed to shut off Devon's unit 10 after October 1 but must continue operating units 7 and 8, which offer 107 megawatts of capacity, until October 2003 or until the ISO deems necessary. Unit 10 provides only 17 MW.The amount by which NRG will be compensated has not been released.NRG is a unit of Xcel Energy Group Inc.
