Williams Denies Taking Plants Off Line Illegitimately

LCG, October 3, 2002In response to a CPUC allegation that certain energy companies manipulated the California power market by operating plants below capacity, Williams Cos. denied that the company ever participated in such behavior.

Williams Cos., along with Dynegy, Duke, Mirant, Reliant, and AES, wasdiscussed in a report by the California Public Utilities Commission, which argued that they failed to furnish as much power as was available during the California energy crisis of 2000/2001.

Williams announced in a press release Tuesday that it did not shut down its plants for any reasons other than for legitimate maintenance or air quality regulations and that it did not withhold capacity in order to manipulate the market.

State Sen. Joe Dunn, the California legislator heading an investigation into power market manipulation, has said that the California Independent System Operator should have been able to detect that power was available during the energy crisis, and referred in general to companies' justifications for their operations as not "getting to the core of the matter."
