EIA Estimates Record U.S. Electric Generating Capacity Additions in 2026, with Solar in the Lead

LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

Pickering A Outage May Last Longer Than Expected

LCG, Oct. 28, 2001--Repairs to a nuclear plant in Ontario, Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) Pickering A, may require more time than expected, "as a result of construction challenges encountered in the refurbishment of certain systems," according to the utility.

Four Pickering A units have been scheduled to be returned to service one at a time, and will provide 2,060 megawatts to the grid once repairs are completed. OPG, which is owned by the provincial government, stated in a release that it expected to return its first unit to operation by the end of the first quarter of 2003.

The costs to bring the first unit back online will determine the likely costs to be incurred on the remaining units. The increase in the cost on the first unit have been C$230 million ($148 million US). Some observers believe that the process of alleviating safety and reliability concerns will last through 2006.
