Massachusetts Plant Expansion Near Completion

LCG, Dec. 11, 2002--An expansion of capacity at the existing Kendall power plant in Cambridge, Massachusetts should be finished by the end of the year or by the first quarter of 2003, according to developer Mirant Corp.

The Kendall plant, which can now produce 100 megawatts, was sold to Mirant under the state's deregulation legislation in 1998 by Commonwealth Energy, which later became part of the utility NSTAR. The construction underway will increase the plant's capacity by 210 megawatts.

Mirant is also pursuing a 750-megawatt, third generating unit at the Bowline plant it owns in New York's Rockland County. That plant, which was acquired three years ago from Orange and Rockland Utilities and Consolidated Edison Inc., is capable of producing 1,139 megawatts. The expected date of operation for the planned new unit is summer of 2006.
