Strong Winds Cut Power for Southern Californians
LCG, Jan. 6, 2003--Wind energy can be used to generate electricity, but for some residents of California this weekend, winds sweeping through the area packed enough force to leave them without power.Yesterday evening, Santa Ana winds struck central, coastal and Southern California, knocking down utility poles in Orange and Arcadia, among others. Wires were brought down in hundreds of locations, prompting Southern California Edison crews to go out to restore them to working condition. Overall, 250,00 customers have had no electricity due to the damage. The high winds, which have been measured at over 75 miles per hour, are expected to continue through Tuesday if not longer, according to the National Weather Service. Although further damage is possible, there were 40,000 customers whose power had not been restored as of this morning.
