Enron Neglected to Pay Any Income Tax 1996-1999

LCG, February 13, 2003-A Congressional report released today regarding the country's most infamous energy company revealed rampant tax code abuse.

Enron Corporation apparently paid no federal income taxes from 1996 through 1999 and only $325 million in federal income taxes between 1990 and 1995. The company also paid just $63 million in federal income tax from 2000 to 2001.

According to a statement by Democrat Senator Max Baucus of Montana, "Enron not only engaged in accounting gimmicks to boost stock prices, but Enron repeatedly abused the tax code."

Congress's tax law analysts, in the form of the Joint Committee on Taxation, released 2,700 pages regarding Enron's tax returns. The Internal Revenue Service has also examined Enron's tax returns from 1989 through 1995 but is still going through more recent returns.

No statement has yet been released as to how much Enron actually owes in taxes since the IRS is still examining paperwork and the bankruptcy court responsible for Enron's case needs to review any IRS claims.
