Development of Iowa Plant Halted
LCG, Feb. 19, 2002--A 615-megawatt gas-fired power plant that was planned for installation in Orient, Iowa, has been cancelled by developer Entergy Corp.According to a spokesman for Entergy Asset Management, Larry Daspit, "we felt we were headed for an overbuilt situation coupled with the recession and rising natural gas prices." The plant was first announced in July 2001, a time when the spot market price for natural gas was at half its current level. The Iowa Utilities Board granted Entergy's application to cancel the plant. Daspit commented, "The economics were not there. It's a very tenuous market." Entergy Asset Management will consider enlarging its generation portfolio through acquisition of projects either operating or under construction.
