New York Governor Asks for No-Fly Zone Near Nuclear Plant

LCG, Mar. 25, 2003--Gov. George Pataki has asked the Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge to designate an area around the Indian Point nuclear plant as a no-fly zone, which would make all flights in the vicinity illegal.

Indian Point has already seen an increase in the number of guards on-site, which now include state police and members of the National Guard. Of New York state's six nuclear plants, Indian Point is the nearest to New York City. Pataki said, "During these different times, we need to assure the general public that all contingencies have been thought of and are being addressed. A no-fly zone would complete the security net we have established around what is perceived to be a vulnerable site."

Currently, aircraft that are specifically authorized under unusual conditions may fly over the plant. Spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security Gordon Johndroe said that the substance of the governor's request is "under review."
