LCG, April 24, 2025--Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil) announced yesterday an agreement with Calpine Corporation (Calpine) to transport and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons per annum (MTA) of CO2 from Calpine’s Baytown Energy Center, a natural gas-fired facility located near Houston, Texas. This is part of Calpine’s Baytown Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project that is designed to add CCS for the facility’s CO2 emissions. The Calpine facility could then provide a 24/7 supply of low-carbon electricity to the Texas grid plus steam to nearby industrial facilities.

Texas Nuke Might Restart in Late Summer
LCG, Apr. 25, 2003--Texas Genco Holdings, majority-owned by CenterPoint Energy, indicated Thursday that repairs at Bay City nuclear generating unit 1 could take until late summer to complete, leaving CenterPoint Energy to supply at least 385 megawatts it owns out of the total unit capacity of 1,250 megawatts from other sources.The Bay City unit was shut down following the discovery of a small amount of boric acid at the bottom of the reactor vessel. An inspection team found the acid, which could mean that a leak of coolant fluid from the reactor might have been able to take place."So the loss of 1,250 megawatt-hours for a few months is not going to have much impact overall," said Kent Saathoff, the director of system operations for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages the Texas electric grid. The anticipated August peak is 57,000 megawatts, while generating capacity in the state is 77,000 megawatts. The other unit at the Bay City plant remains operational.David Tees, the chief executive of Texas Genco, said "We have developed a preliminary schedule for the inspection, repair and return of this unit based on various scenarios, even though there are a myriad of unknowns." CenterPoint has access to 750 megawatts of reserve capacity that is kept for such unforeseen occurrences.
