Wind Farm Approval Appealed in West Virginia

LCG, May 5, 2003--A West Virginia group, Friends of the Allegheny Front, has appealed the decision by the Public Service Commission that granted NedPower, a planned wind farm, the go-ahead for installation along a scenic ridge line.

A filing was made Friday with West Virginia's Supreme Court, and asserts that indirect impacts of the wind farm, on tourism and property values, among other effects, were not considered during the PSC's review of the project. The planned project calls for 200 turbines that will extend to 400 feet above the Allegheny Front's ridge line in Grant County.

Friends of the Allegheny Front asked the Supreme Court to overturn the order or send the decision to the PSC again for further hearings. Speaking for the group, Judd Rodd was quoted in the Charleston Gazette: "Until guidelines are developed to protect the local economy, as well as natural and cultural resources, it is in everyone's best interest for the PSC to place a moratorium on wind power plants."
