Allegheny May Seek Bankruptcy Protection
LCG, June 24, 2003Power and utility company Allegheny Energy said it might seek bankruptcy protection. The Maryland company noted that several factors have contributed to its decline, including its trading status, the cancellation of projects, and general company performance. As a result, Allegheny is in violation of a public utility law regarding a common equity ratio requirement. Financial agreements that Allegheny made with other firms require that the company comply with the law, and Allegheny has requested that the Securities and Exchange Commission allow it further financing. Alleghenys ratio of equity to total capital structure is less that 28 percent.
