New Jersey to See Deregulation in a Month
LCG, July 1, 2003Starting the first of August, New Jerseys electricity rate caps will be lifted. It is hoped that the move will lead to a more competitive electricity generation market, although some people are worried about elevated power costs, especially since utilities have racked up $1 billion in deferment. New Jersey's energy market started opening up four years ago with the Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act, and in August the so-called phase-in period will have expired. Many non-utility energy companies, especially renewable energy producers, have been trying to compete in the New Jersey market with little success, since prices have been fixed. Retail consumers can expect prices to increase by as much as ten percent this summer as utilities try to recover losses due to high wholesale prices and capped retail prices over the last few years.
