San Francisco Power Outage Affects 120,000

LCG, Dec. 22, 2003--A fire at a key Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) substation in downtown San Francisco on Saturday evening resulted in a power outage affecting many of the city's neighborhoods for up to 30 hours.

The outage began at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, knocking out power in the commercial district, where holiday shoppers were out in droves. Streetlights and traffic signals went dark, and remained so until Sunday evening. Two centrally located stations of the underground railway system, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), remained out of service through Sunday, meaning that riders needed either to walk further to their destination, or take buses or streetcars. The outage was estimated to have cut electricity to 120,000 customers, in neighborhoods spanning the peninsula.

As of today, the cause of the Mission Street substation fire, which occurred in a three-story building, had still not been identified. PG&E spokesman Ron Low said that following the restoration of power to all but one percent of those affected by 9:30 p.m. Sunday, "We will begin a very thorough investigation to deterine the cause." The last major outage in the city occurred in 1998, when roughly 370,000 customers experienced power failure.
