Long Island to Install 120 MW Temporary Capacity
LCG, May 29, 2003-Today the Long Island Power Authority announced that it will build temporary generating capacity to cover summer peak demand.Six simple-cycle turbines will be mounted on trucks at the Holtsville and Shoreham substations. Each turbine has 20.5 megawatts of capacity and will be used to head off rolling blackouts in the case that demand exceeds available capacity. Available capacity in the area is low for the summer. TransEnergie's 300-megawatt Cross Sound Cable has not been operative because regulations require such units to be buried more deeply. Also, Calpine Corporation's 45-megawatt Stony Brook plant will not be available. The temporary turbines are likely to cost about $17 million.
