Reliant Expects Gain on Sale of NY Power Plants

LCG, May 25, 2004--A group of 72 power plants acquired by Reliant Energy Inc. in early 2002 will be sold, according to a definitive agreement signed with Brascan Corp. of Toronto.

The deal represents a transfer of 770 megawatts, with all of the plants being hydro except for a single cogeneration plant. It is subject to antitrust review by regulators at the federal and state levels. Brascan, which holds power generation and real estate assets, would increase its ownership of generating capacity by approximately 50 per cent.

Reliant anticipates that it will realize a "significant" gain from the transaction in the third quarter. The assets were purchased by Reliant when it acquired Orion Power Holdings and that company's 6,122 megawatts of generating capacity.
