New Lawsuits Driven by California's Energy Crisis

LCG, July 12, 2004--San Francisco County and Santa Clara County filed separate lawsuits against natural gas providers and marketers alleged to have conspired to increase the price of gas during California's energy crisis, costing consumers billions of dollars. Named in the suit are San Diego-based Sempra Energy and three subsidiaries (Sempra Energy Trading, San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas), plus Aquila, Coral Energy Resources, Dynegy, EnCana, Reliant Energy, and CMS Energy.

The suits were filed July 8, 2004 in San Diego Superior Court, and the counties are seeking damages for paying inflated prices for natural gas. Nancy Fineman, an attorney for San Francisco and Santa Clara counties, stated, "These companies were working together during the energy crisis to make enormous profits for themselves at the expense of California consumers."

Sempra spokesman Doug Kline was quick to label the suits "meritless."
