LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

LCG, October 23, 2025--Google announced today a first-of-its kind agreement to support a natural gas-fired power plant with carbon capture and storage (CCS). The 400-MW Broadwing Energy power project, located in Decatur, Illinois, will capture and permanently store its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. By agreeing to buy most of the power it generates, Google is helping get this new, baseload power source built and connected to the regional grid that supports our data centers.

Ontario Proposes Major Hydro Development Project

LCG, March 22, 2005--The Ontario Ministry of Energy announced earlier this week that it has delivered a joint proposal with Hydro-Qubec and SNC-Lavalin to develop hydroelectric generation facilities that would add 2,824 MW of capacity on the Lower Churchill River in Labrador. The proposal was submitted in response to a Request for Expressions of Interest and Proposals issued by the government of Newfoundland and Labrador in January. The project, estimated by Hydro-Quebec to cost in the neighborhood of $9 billion, would include a 2,000-MW dam at Gull Island and an 824-MW dam at Muskrat Falls. Montreal-based SNC-Lavalin Inc. would be responsible for construction. Hydro-Qubec would accelerate construction of a 1,250-MW interconnection with Ontario so as to be in service by 2009. In addition, Hydro-Qubec has indicated a willingness to provide Ontario with 670 MW of power, which is Ontario's estimated share of Gull Island's generation, by 2011.The additional energy supplies are critical to the Province of Ontario, which has committed to closing 7,600 MW of coal-fired generating capacity by 2008 in order to improve air quality. The first coal-fired station to be shutdown will be the Lakeview Generating Station, which is scheduled to occur by the end of April. The Lakeview station is located on the shores of Lake Ontario, about 15 miles southwest of Toronto. To help bridge the power supply gap, earlier this month the Ontario Energy Ministry announced a tentative agreement with Bruce Power to restart Units 1 and 2 at the Bruce A nuclear generating station in Kincardine. The two nuclear units commenced operations in 1977 and were shut down in 1995 and 1997 by the prior owner, Ontario Power Generation (OPG). Bruce Power previously restarted Units 3 and 4 at Bruce A in the fourth quarter of 2003, following a facility review and related modifications. Each of the four units at Bruce A have a capacity of approximately 750 MW.
