Ontario Awards Contracts for Nearly 1,000 MW of Renewables
LCG, November 21, 2005--The Ontario Ministry of Energy announced yesterday that it has approved nine renewable energy projects totaling 975 MW of electric generating capacity. The awards result from a request for proposals issued in April 2004.The projects include eight wind projects and one hydro project that are all targeted to commence operations prior to the year 2009. Canadian Hydro Developers, Inc. was awarded three, 20-year supply contracts. The supplies will be generated from the 132-MW, Melancthon II Wind Project; the 198-MW, Wolfe Island Wind Project; and the 10-MW (net) Island Falls Hydroelectric Project, which is a run-of-river project.Ontario approved contracts with Enbridge, Inc. to build two wind farms on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, with a generating capacity of approximately 200 MW.Epcor Utilities, Inc., owned by the city of Edmonton, Alberta, now has approved contracts to construct the 160-MW, Kingsbridge II wind farm along the shores of Lake Huron near Goderich, Ontario, where it is currently installing a smaller wind farm. Brascan Power Corp. was awarded a 20-year, supply contract for the Prince Phase II wind farm. The 90-MW project will consist of 60 wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of 1.5 MW, located near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.Ontario also selected the 76-MW, Ripley Wind Power Project proposed by Suncor and Acciona Energia, who are equal partners in the project. The project will be located east of Lake Huron and will include 38 wind turbines. The last supply contract is for the 101-MW, Kruger Energy Port Alma Project, south of Chatham. The renewable projects highlight the continued effort by Ontario to develop clean electric supplies - that do not generate greenhouse gases - to enable the planned closure of existing, coal-fired plants.Last month, the Ontario Ministry of Energy announced that it reached an agreement with Bruce Power to refurbish and restart Units 1 and 2 of the Bruce A Nuclear Power Station near Kincardine in southwestern Ontario. The two, 750-MW nuclear units commenced operations in 1977 and were shut down in 1995 and 1997 by the prior owner, Ontario Power Generation. One of the two units is planned to return to service in 2009.
