LCG, April 24, 2025--Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil) announced yesterday an agreement with Calpine Corporation (Calpine) to transport and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons per annum (MTA) of CO2 from Calpine’s Baytown Energy Center, a natural gas-fired facility located near Houston, Texas. This is part of Calpine’s Baytown Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project that is designed to add CCS for the facility’s CO2 emissions. The Calpine facility could then provide a 24/7 supply of low-carbon electricity to the Texas grid plus steam to nearby industrial facilities.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Inc. chooses LCG's UPLAN integrated models for generation, transmission, reliability, and investment analysis
LCG Consulting, Los Altos, California, April 23, 2003 – The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, Inc. (ERCOT) has adopted the UPLAN Network Power Model developed by LCG Consulting for their long term projections of the costs of congestion, balancing energy, ancillary services, losses and other factors that are necessary for a realistic economic analysis of long-lived investments such as high voltage transmission lines. ERCOT will also use UPLAN to evaluate the projected costs of Reliability Must-Run Units and Out-of-Merit order services needed to alleviate system constraints in accordance with the market protocols.
ERCOT keeps the lights on in Texas and is one of ten regional reliability councils in North America. ERCOT is home to the largest control area in the United States and oversees the operation of over 77,000 megawatts of generation and 37,000 miles of transmission lines in the state of Texas. The primary regulatory authority for ERCOT is the Public Utility Commission of Texas. ERCOT's members include retail consumers, investor and municipally owned electric utilities, rural electric co-ops, river authorities, independent generators, power marketers and retail electric providers.
UPLAN base case simulation for ERCOT models approximately 500 generators with a total capacity of 74,000 MW using a wide range of generating technologies, 6,000 transmission lines representing 37,000 miles of power grid and 1200 contingencies.
Important factors contributing to ERCOT’s decision include that the UPLAN Network Power Model (UPLAN-NPM) is fully compliant with the newly announced FERC Standard Market Design (SMD) and meets all the functional requirements of Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) proposed in the FERC Order 2000. The model can accurately dispatch generators as well as forecast Locational Marginal Prices (LMP). The UPLAN-NPM is also compliant with the rules in the ERCOT market to solve for zonal balancing energy and congestion management.
