EIA Estimates Record U.S. Electric Generating Capacity Additions in 2026, with Solar in the Lead

LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

Southern Announces PPA with Progress for New Unit

LCG, July 6, 2006--Southern Company announced yesterday that it has executed a long-term purchase power agreement (PPA) with Progress Ventures, the non-regulated subsidiary of Progress Energy. The agreement calls for Southern to provide approximately 621 MW of wholesale electricity to Progress Ventures from 2009 through 2015.

The electricity is to be generated by a new, combined-cycle power unit to be built at Plant Franklin, located in Smiths, Alabama. The existing plant includes two, gas-fired, combined-cycle units. Unit 1 was placed into commercial service in 2002, and Unit 2 began delivering power in 2003. Construction on Unit 3 had been underway but was suspended in August 2004 pending a long-term power purchase agreement. With the new agreement, Unit 3 is now scheduled to commence commercial operations by the fourth quarter of 2008.

Plant Franklin is owned by Southern's unregulated subsidiary, Southern Power, which has cost-based contracts with other Southern affiliates, Alabama Power and Georgia Power, for operations and maintenance services at Southern Power facilities.
