X-energy Commences First Irradiation Tests of Advanced TRISO-X Nuclear Fuel at Idaho National Laboratory

LCG, November 6, 2025--X-energy Reactor Company, LLC, (X-energy) and the U.S. Office of Nuclear Energy today announced the start of confirmatory irradiation testing at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to qualify X-energy’s proprietary TRISO-X fuel pebbles for commercial use in the Xe-100 Small Modular Reactor (SMR). (TRISO stands for TRi-structural ISOtropic). This is the first time that TRISO-X fuel pebbles will undergo irradiation testing in a U.S. lab, which is a critical step in meeting requirements set forth by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the commercial deployment of advanced reactors that will use the fuel.

NextEra Energy and Google Collaborate on Accelerating Nuclear Power Deployment

LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

Unistar to Develop New Nuclear Reactor at Calvert Cliffs

LCG, May 2, 2007--UniStar Nuclear yesterday notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that it has selected a site adjacent to Constellation Energy's existing Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Maryland for Unistar's first combined construction and operating license (COL) application. Unistar Nuclear is a joint venture of Constellation Energy and AREVA Inc.

In the fall of 2005, Unistar Nuclear identified Constellation's Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant and the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station as finalists in its site selection process. Specifying the site is a key step in the COL application process with the NRC. The submission of an application does not create a commitment by Constellation Energy to build a new nuclear reactor at the site.

Unistar Nuclear's application will include AREVA's 1,600-MW, U.S. Evolutionary Power Reactor (US EPR). The US EPR is based upon AREVA's 1,600-MW, European EPR that is now being deployed in Europe. One EPR reactor is under construction in Finland and is scheduled to be operational in 2009.

UniStar Nuclear?s development arm, UniStar Development Company, announced on April 5 that it contracted with Ameren Corporation?s Missouri-based utility, AmerenUE, to support the preparation of a COL application. Unistar anticipates using the application for Calvert Cliffs as a reference document for future UniStar Nuclear COL applications to the NRC for other sites. UniStar Nuclear plans to submit its reference COL application to the NRC no later than March 15, 2008.
