LCG, July 10, 2025--The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) accepted a construction permit application for review from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to build one of the nation’s first small modular reactors (SMR). TVA submitted its application in late May to use GE Vernova Hitachi’s BWRX-300 design and to install the advanced nuclear plant at its Clinch River site near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. TVA's application is the first in the U.S. that uses GE Vernova Hitachi’s BWRX-300 design.

LCG, July 9, 2025--Strategic Value Partners, LLC (together with its affiliates, SVP) yesterday announced that its managed funds (the "SVP Funds") have agreed to acquire Red Oak Power, an 831-MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle power generation facility located in Sayreville, New Jersey.

Talking Trash in Florida
LCG, August 15, 2007--Biomass Gas & Electric (BG&E), an Atlanta-based alternative energy developer, is evaluating sites for its proposed waste-to-energy project in Florida and has run into some local opposition. BG&E recently announced that it has executed a 20-year, power purchase agreement (PPA) with Progress Energy for the energy from the proposed 75 MW electric generating facility. Sites under consideration in Liberty County have drawn opposition from Elliott Lonzell Duggar, a former Liberty County Commissioner.
The Commissioner believes that the plant could burn animal waste or garbage, and he is concerned that storing trash will produce odors, attract rats, increase traffic and pose health threats. Duggar stated, "These small counties just don't like for big-city people to push things down our throats, especially garbage."
Rather than using animal waste or garbage, BG&E officials stated that BG&E plans to use waste wood, such as yard trimmings, tree bark and wood knots from paper mills, at its proposed plant. Furthermore, BG&E stated that a location has not been selected and that sites are under consideration in other counties. The proposed facility is scheduled to commence commercial operation in 2011.
