LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

California ISO Announces New "Go-Live" Date for MRTU
LCG, August 23, 2007--The California Independent System Operator (California ISO) yesterday announced a new "go-live" date of March 31, 2008 (for a trade date of April 1, 2008) for the implementation of the Market Redesign and Technology Upgrade (MRTU) program. The prior target was February 2008.
The MRTU is designed to improve the electricity market structure in California so as to enable a more efficient and competitive market to evolve.
Key elements of the MRTU include: a financially binding, day-ahead energy market; models for the California ISO to forecast and identify transmission congestion as a tool in managing congestion; Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP) to provide the proper economic signals to influence new generation and transmission investments; provisions to enhance the development of demand response and renewable resources, and upgrades to the aging ISO computer system.
The California ISO stated that numereous MRTU milestones have already been achieved, such as the launching into production mode the system for Congestion Revenue Rights (CCRs).
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in September 2006 unanimously approved the MRTU program submitted by the California ISO. At that time, the MRTU was scheduled to be implemented in November 2007.
