FPL Energy Files to Construct 250-MW Solar Power Plant in California
LCG, March 27, 2008--FPL Energy yesterday announced that it has filed an Application for Certification with the California Energy Commission (CEC) to construct, own and operate a 250-MW solar plant in the Mojave Desert. FPL Energy's goal is to add at least 600 MW of new solar generating facilities by 2015.
The Beacon Solar Energy Project will incorporate a concentrating solar power (CSP) design whereby arrays of parabolic mirrors track the sun and concentrate the sun's energy on a heat transfer fluid, which in turn is used to transform water into steam for a steam turbine that creates power. Over 500,000 mirrors will be distributed over the 2,000-acre project site in eastern Kern County.
FPL Energy anticipates that construction will begin late next year, and the project is scheduled to commence commercial operations by the third quarter of 2011, given timely regulatory approvals.
FPL Energy is not alone with its plans to develop large-scale CSP facilities. Last month, Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) announced plans to construct the Solana Generating Station, a 280-MW CSP plant. The Solana Generating Station will be built approximately 70 miles southwest of Phoenix, Arizona and is scheduled to commence operations by 2011. Abengoa Solar Inc. will build, own and operate the plant, and APS will purchase all of the power generated, subject to approval by the Arizona Corporation Commission.
