BP America and Dominion Celebrate Construction Kick-off of 750-MW Wind Project
LCG, May 30, 2008--BP Alternative Energy and Dominion yesterday held wind turbine blade signing ceremony with Indiana Governor Daniels for the Fowler Ridge Wind Farm, located approximately 90 miles northwest of Indianapolis. When completed, the capacity of the wind farm will be 750 MW. Dominion and BP are partners for 650 MW, and BP will retain sole ownership of the remaining 100 MW.
The initial phase of the Fowler Ridge Wind Farm project will consist of 222 wind turbines, including 182 Vestas V-82 1.65-MW turbines and 40 Clipper C-96 2.5-MW turbines. The project footprint will use 50-thousand acres of land owned by over 285 individual property owners. When the initial phase is completed by the end of this year, the electric generating capacity will be 400 MW. Construction of a second, 350-MW phase may begin as early as next year.
Dominion Energy Marketing, a subsidiary of Dominion, has a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) associated with 200 MW of capacity. Two subsidiaries of American Electric Power (AEP), Indiana Michigan Power and Appalachian Power, have long-term PPA's for 100 MW apiece.
A BP America spokesperson stated, "This year we will invest more than $6 billion in U.S. energy projects with about 10 percent going to wind and solar power and biofuels research. By year end, we'll have a thousand megawatts of wind power on line with plans to double that in two years."
